Pulmonary/Critical Care

Our Pulmonary department is dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment and education of patients with lung disease. The department includes board-certified Pulmonary/Critical Care Physicians and licensed Respiratory Therapists. Lung diseases commonly treated include asthma, COPD, pulmonary fibrosis, sarcoidosis, pleural effusions, lung cancer, sleep apnea, chronic cough and cough productive of blood (hemoptysis), pulmonary vascular disease including embolism, pulmonary hypertension and shortness of breath of various causes.

  • Bronchoscopy including needle biopsy, forceps biopsy, foreign body removal and placement of catheters for endobronchial radiation
  • Thoracentesis (removal of fluid from chest cavity)
  • Chest tube placement for drainage of air or fluid from chest cavity
  • Critical care procedures including placement of central lines and airways


Pulmonary Function

The following Pulmonary Functions Tests performed in the assessment, monitoring and treatment of lung disease or as part of research protocols:
  • Spirometry Pre and Post Bronchodilator
  • Lung volumes
  • Diffusing Capacity for carbon monoxide
  • Methacholine Challenge
  • Exercise Testing with assessment of ventilation and gas exchange
  • Overnight oximetry and timed walking distance 
Pulmonary rehab is offered to individuals through Ball Memorial Hospital with the following conditions:
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (emphysema, chronic bronchitis)
  • Pulmonary fibrosis and Restrictive Lung Disease
  • Asthma
  • Cystic Fibrosis
Benefits of Pulmonary Rehab include an improved sense of well being, improved exercise tolerance, and reduced shortness of breath as well as reduced anxiety and reduction in hospitalizations.
Critical Care

Our Critical care physicians provide care to hospitalized patients that are critically ill. Commonly managed diseases include:
  • Cardiopulmonary arrest
  • Respiratory failure including COPD, pneumonia, acute lung injury/ARDS as well as neuromuscular weakness
  • Shock
  • Severe hypertension
  • Multisystem organ failure
  • Sepsis -- overwhelming infection
  • Central nervous system crisease
  • Post operative management
  • Congestive heart failure
